ΟΜΙΛΙΑ:Agent based ubiquitous computing and different applications

Tην Τρίτη 28 Ιουνίου και ώρα 10.00 στο αμφιθέατρο του κτιρίου ΔΔΕ θα γίνει ομιλία της Δρ Eleni Mangina με τίτλο "Agent based ubiquitous computing and different applications"

Σύντομο Βιογραφικό
Eleni Mangina in 2002 was appointed to the position of College Lecturer in the Department of Computer Science at UCD. Prior to that she was a research assistant in the Department of EEE at Strathclyde University in the U.K. for one year to complete her PhD studies. In 1997 she was awarded with a three year scholarship from the Greek goverment (Goverment institution of scholarships in Greece) to complete her postgraduate studies specialised in Artificial Inteligence. This funding was used to complete her postgraduate studies (M.Sc. in Artificial Intelligence) in the Department of Artificial Intelligence at University of Edinburgh in the UK, and supported the first two years of her PhD studies in the Department of EEE, Intelligent Systems group, at Strathclyde University in the UK. She has also an M.Sc.in Agricultural Science (collaborating with the Informatics laboratory at the Agricultural University of Athens), where she was first introduced to the concepts of Artificial Intelligence. Ms Eleni Mangina has focused her research interests on agent-based technology and given numerous presentations on the area of Intelligent agents¿ applications in engineering.

Dr Eleni Mangina's current research profile includes active research in the area of applications of agent-based technology in a number of different application domains like engineering, bioinformatics, education, agriculture, supply chain management and music. She has been an active researcher in national and international level, with a track record of around 65 publications in national and international peer reviewed workshops and conferences and high standard international journals (i.e. IEEE Transactions, Elsevier etc.). Her research group is comprised of PhD students and a number of students have graduated already under her supervision with MSc degree and PhD. Dr Mangina has successfully awarded research funding at a national and international level (HEA, UCD Funding Scheme, Enterprise Ireland and European Commission funding). She has been an active member in societies related to agent based technology and e-learning information technology applications and has organised a number of relevant international workshops. Her research leadership has encouraged the deployment of the results from her research group within different Schools in UCD and other academic institutions abroad. Based on her collaboration with Fudan University, Software School and despite the diversity of cultures in the world and the implications of it within the teaching strategies and learning styles, knowledge transfer across different cultures has been one of the most challenging tasks for Dr Mangina. Her research in agent-based e-learning environments follows the statement from the teaching, learning and research policy and strategy of UCD, which focuses on encouraging the power of enhancing students' imagination and broaden their view of the world, while challenging them during the lectures through the use of intelligent educational software developed from her research group. Dr Mangina has conducted a number of research related assignments as registered European Commission expert evaluator for the 7th Framework Programme; Research proposal evaluator for EU funded projects under PENED programme, and Internal PhD examiner for UCD PhD candidates. She has also given invited talks in the areas of agent applications and effective e-learning practices.

Περίληψη ομιλίας

Her talk will focus on agent based ubiquitous computing and different applications. Ubiquitous computing names the third wave in computing, where the personal computing era appears when technology recedes into the background of our lives. The widespread use of new mobile technology
implementing wireless communications such as personal digital assistants (PDAs) and smart phones enables a new type of advanced applications. In the past years, the main focus of research in mobile services has aimed at the anytime-anywhere principle (ubiquitous computing). However, there is
more to it. The increasing demand for distributed problem solving led to the development of multi-agent systems. The latter are formed from a collection of independent software entities whose collective skills can be applied in complex and real-time domains. The target of such systems is to
demonstrate how goal directed, robust and optimal behavior can arise from interactions between individual autonomous intelligent software agents.
These software entities exhibit characteristics like autonomy, responsiveness, pro-activeness and social ability. Their functionality and effectiveness has proven to be highly depended on the design and development and the application domain. In fact, in several cases, the design and development of effective services should take into account the characteristics of the context from which a service is requested. Context is the set of suitable environmental states and settings concerning a user, which are relevant for a situation sensitive application in the process of adapting the services and information offered to the user. Agent technology seems to be the right technology to offer the possibility of exploring the dynamic context of the user in order to provide added-value services or to execute more and complex tasks. In this respect, agent-based ubiquitous computing can benefit from marrying the agent-based technology for the extensive usage of distributed functionality, to be deployed for lightweight devices and enable to combine ubiquity and intelligence in different application areas and
challenge with questions the research communities in computer science, artificial intelligence and engineering.
